Abstract:
Agrriculture is one of the subjects taught in secondary schools in Kenya. The Ministry of Education recommended seven general agriculture textbooks and fifty—five reference books covering specific areas at the inception of 8:4:4 System of Education in 1985. Many more agriculture textbooks have been released into the market since then. It is upon the agriculture teacher to select the appropriate ones for teaching. The objectives of this study were to identify the text- books used in teaching agriculture, rate their popularity and establish their appropriateness. The research method was a survey using a questionnaire. It was carried out in . the four secondary schools in Kemdnl Division of Kisii district. The agriculture teachers in those secondary schools completed questionnaires that were analysed to achieve the above objectives. The data was analysed through descriptive statistics. The findings of the study were that eight different textbooks were being used by different agriculture teachers. K_I.E. (1987). fiecondary Agriculture Forms l to 4.
