dc.description.abstract Absenteeism is a common problem that affects students’ academic performance, wastage of learning time, teachers’ inability to impart knowledge to students in a uniform and systematic order, wastage of school fees and higher education opportunities. Factors influencing student absenteeism in day mixed public secondary schools in Eldoret municipality, Kenya are: the influence of moral laxity amongst the students, inadequate parental advice which in general are gender specific, inadequate facilities, poor administration of schools. school fees, latmess, sickness, lack of organized programs of guidance and counseling, and student absenteeism. The purpose of the study was to document the factors that influenced students’ absenteeism and its subsequent consequences on academic perfonnance in examinations and the need for guidance and counseling students who are absent. A representative sample of teachers and students were drawn from seven-mixed day public secondary schools, a finite population; N=230 were involval in the study. The selected sample of seven class teachers from the seven schools Wm required to fill information from the school records such as reports, discipline record books and registers. Questionnaires were administered to a representative sample size of 144 students. A descriptive and infuential procedure were carried out on the data collected from the questionnaires and the results from the tests to establish whether any conclusion would be drawn concerning the role of moral laxity of students and inadequate parental advice and interest of students in school. A t-test assuming equal variance was used to test gender differences in performance and absenteeism. frequency tables and percentages were used to detennine the proportion of nudents who needed counseling to manage the problem of absenteeism. en_US
