dc.description.abstract This dissertation examines the application of the method of transformation of variables technique to atomic structure in describing the motion of an electron in an atom. The study investigates how the velocity and the‘ kinetic energy of an electron determines the shape of an orbital and hence the shape of an atom. The study also seeks to determine why the shape of an atom changes with the changes in its environrnent. The study therefore provides more knowledge in the description of the atomic structure without the use of the theoretical quantum numbers. en_US
