Abstract: The study sought to establish the factors that influence women pineapple vendors on their
household livelihoods. The informal sector is a source of livelihood to women pineapple
vendors. This study was motivated by the fact that women pineapple vendors try to provide for their household needs even though majority have challenges. However, little was known about the factors influencing women pineapple vendors in earning a living for their families.
The study was carried out in Bureti Sub-County, Kericho County. The following specific
objectives guided the study: to assess the social factors influencing household livelihoods of women pineapple vendors; to evaluate the economic factors influencing household livelihood of women pineapple vendors; to determine the strategies used by women pineapple vendors to improve their household livelihoods in Bureti Sub-County, Kericho County, Kenya. The study was informed by Rational Choice Theory and Collective Action Theory; and the sustainable livelihoods Approach (SLA) model that complement each other. A Descriptive research design was used for this study. The sample size of the survey was ninety-eight respondents. Moreover, the study interviewed twelve (12) key informants. The unit of analysis was women pineapple vendors in Bureti Sub County. This study employed simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. The study used interview schedule method. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 for the windows was an aid in data analyses. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics where frequencies and percentages were computed and presented in tables, graphs and pie charts while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study findings showed that the majority of women pineapple vendors obtain their source of livelihoods from self-employment at 85.7%. Also, the majority of women pineapple vendors attained primary education and were aged between 40 to 46 years. The livelihoods of women pineapple vendors have improved food security, income, and payment of school fees for their children. The challenges that the vendors face include inaccessibility to credit, lack of storage for their ware, decision making, inadequate capital, little income, lack of training, environmental problems and conflicts. The study recommends women pineapple vendors to venture in other businesses like retail shop; training; access to credit to improve on their livelihoods. In addition, women pineapple vendors should be promoted and protected through
support and passing legislation to preserve informal sector and in general contribution

Abstract: This study sought to examine the effect of growth strategies on the performance of food
manufacturing firms in Nairobi County, Kenya. The objectives of the study were: to establish the effect of market penetration on organizational performance, to determine the effect of market development on organizational performance, to examine the effect of product development on organizational performance, to establish the effect of diversification on organizational performance and finally to determine the combined effect of market penetration, market development, product development and diversification on organizational performance. The study was guided by the Strategic Management model. This study adopted a correlational research design and a cross sectional survey design. The study population comprised of all food manufacturing firms in Nairobi County, Kenya. Proportionate stratified sampling method was adopted to determine the sample units. The study used primary data.
The data was collected using questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using
descriptive statistics which included frequencies and percentages, mean and standard
deviation. Simple Regression model was used to test hypotheses HA1 to HA4.Pearsons
correlation was used to measure the relationship among the study variables. Multiple
Regression was used to test hypothesis HA5. Analyzed data was presented using tables. The study found that: market penetration has a positive and significant effect on organizational performance, market development has a positive and significant effect on organizational performance, product development has a positive and significant effect on organizational performance, diversification has a positive and significant effect on organizational performance and finally the combined effect of market penetration, market development, product development and diversification positively and significantly affect organizational performance. The study concluded that growth strategies have a positive and significant effect on organizational performance hence it was recommended that higher levels of these growth strategies would result in higher levels of organizational performance. The study also recommended that future research should adopt longitudinal research design in data collection and replication of the study in other industries and countries since this study only focused on cross sectional research design in food manufacturing firms in Nairobi, Kenya.
The study further recommended the need for future research to cover other factors related to inorganic growth strategies including mergers and take overs that can have an effect on

Abstract: Poetry texts are amongst many texts that are said to be challenging to translate. This research analysed the challenges in translating poetry in the book: Wimbo wa Lawino, by Paul Sozigwa (1975). The purpose of this research was first, to investigate the reasons behind the linguistic challenges when translating poetry in the above mentioned book. Secondly, the research also investigated how these linguistic challenges affect language use. Finally it investigated how the language use affect aesthetics in poetry, in the above mentioned book.
The theories used were: The Linguistic theory and the Communication theory. The research design was descriptive analysis. The researcher analysed thirteen poems focusing on the linguistic challenges, language use and aesthetics. The source text was the English text: Song of Lawino by Okot P’ Bitek who wrote Wer Pa Lawino in Acholi, laterhe translated it into English. The target text was the Kiswahili text: Wimbo wa Lawino written by Paul Sozigwa.
The findings revealed that the translator succeeded in maintaining the form of the poem
which was free verse. However, he failed to maintain the structure of verses, stanzas due to the variation of the three languages: Acholi, English and Kiswahili, mistranslation,

Abstract: The emergence of boda-boda motorcycles as a means of transport has brought a new dimension to road safety in Kenya. The rising trend of motorcycle accidents has raised serious security concerns among citizens in general and security agents in particular. This study examined incidences and implications of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists in Embakasi area in Nairobi County. Specifically, the study examined prevalence of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists, factors responsible for road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists, and implications of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists in Embakasi area. The study was anchored on the Rational Choice Theory and System Approach Theory as explanatory frameworks. This study was descriptive in nature. Sample respondents were boda boda riders. The sample respondents were 135 members of boda boda operators. Key Informants were selected purposively. The study utilized interview schedule with both open and
closed ended questions administered in a face-to-face interaction. This was used to collect quantitative information on general knowledge, perceptions, opinions and experiences from sample respondents. Key informant interview guide was used to collect qualitative information from individuals believed to hold pertinent information regarding incidences of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists in Embakasi Area. Qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis were utilized. Quantitative data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences and the information collected was presented in frequency and percentages. Qualitative data was analyzed by way of interpretation of responses obtained from key informants. All information from the analyzed data was presented thematically based on study objectives. Research findings revealed that, motorcycle accidents were prevalent in the study area.
In addition, this study established that more than half of the motorcycle accidents were attributed to preventable human error that ranged from over speeding (93.7%), wrong overtaking (63.5%), drunkenness (26.8%) and overloading (19.0%). Implications of the motorcycle accidents included damage to property, medical costs, injury, death, crime, and loss of livelihood. The study recommendations include: mandatory registration, refresher training, testing of boda boda riders and concerted public road safety awareness.2019-05-01T00:00:00Z
